Clayton is the seat of Rabun County, in the corner of Georgia where the state runs out and the Blue Ridge takes over. Most visitors rent a cabin on a lake road and drive everywhere. The White Birch takes the opposite line: six rooms on East Savannah Street, on the square itself, with the restaurants and shops of the town on the doorstep. Inside, the material that gives the house its name is used rather than referenced, with birch bark on headboards and cabinet fronts and birch limbs worked in as ornament. Screened porches, a lounge with a fireplace, and a breakfast room that faces Screamer Mountain.

Why It Works

The argument is the combination, which is rare in the southern mountains: a genuinely small inn, finished with some care, on a walkable square rather than at the end of a gravel drive. Six rooms and a guests only bar mean the evening belongs to the house rather than to a public lobby, and the fourteen and over rule keeps the register adult without making a policy of it. Beyond the town, Rabun County is the point: Tallulah Gorge with its rim trails and suspension bridge, Lake Burton for the boats, a run of north Georgia wineries, and trails climbing in every direction, the Appalachian Trail among them. The inn is close enough to the Carolina line that a day can be spent across it. Autumn is the season everyone knows about, but the spring laurel is the local secret.

Persimmon, Hemlock and the Mountain Laurel Suite

The rooms are named for what grows outside, and they differ enough that the choice matters. The Mountain Laurel Suite is the one to ask about for a longer stay; Persimmon and Hemlock sit in the body of the house. Birch runs through all of them as headboards, cabinet fronts and ornament, which sounds like a theme and works because it is the only one. With six rooms there is no category ladder to climb, so the useful question at booking is which outlook you want and whether a porch matters to you.

The Laurel Bar, and Breakfast Ordered Rather Than Served
