Baker's Hill Inn
★★★★★A Hundred-Year-Old House on Millionaire's Row
Baker's Hill Inn occupies a three-level house built around 110 years ago, during the years Bluefield's downtown department stores were thriving and the city's coal and railroad money was building its grandest private homes. The house sits in south Bluefield, in a neighborhood still known locally as Millionaire's Row, where large homes from the same era remain carefully kept. Converted into a three-room bed and breakfast, the inn trades scale for intimacy: this is a house first, a hotel only in function.
Why It Works
We chose it for the kind of hospitality that only happens at this size. Lisa Sydnor, a former police officer, opened the inn roughly a decade ago and still runs it herself, serving breakfast hot each morning and talking with guests about the city's history with the ease of someone who has lived it. Three rooms means three conversations, not a front-desk shift, and the renovated bedrooms, dining room, and living areas read as a private home kept in excellent order rather than a commercial property dressed to look like one.
Why This Location
Bluefield sits on the Virginia-West Virginia border, a city that was once among the busiest in the country, built by coal miners and railroad workers and nicknamed nature's air-conditioned city for the cool relief its mountain elevation offered in summer. The city's fortunes have turned more than once, and its downtown, along with the grand homes of neighborhoods like the one around the inn, is in the middle of a quiet revival, drawing new residents and renewed attention to houses that sat quiet for decades. For a traveler who likes a place with a visible past, Bluefield offers more of it per block than most small Appalachian cities.

Three Rooms, Run by Someone Who Used to Carry a Badge
Sydnor's own story is as much a draw as the house itself: she spent a career in law enforcement before opening the inn, and has spoken about eventually selling it to retire to a nearby farm with her husband, a plan that has not yet arrived. In the meantime, the inn runs on her presence, and guests who stay more than one night tend to come away knowing more about Bluefield's rise and fall than any guidebook would tell them.
Bluefield's Second Act
The city's downtown, lined with the shells of early-twentieth-century department stores, is partway through a reckoning: some of those buildings are slated for demolition, while interest in the surrounding neighborhoods, including bidding wars for stately houses near the inn, has picked up since the pandemic, with new residents arriving from as far as California. Staying at Baker's Hill Inn puts a guest inside that story rather than reading about it afterward, close enough to downtown to watch the change happen in real time.
Before You Book
This is not a resort weekend, and it is not meant to be: three rooms, a fixed breakfast hour, and an innkeeper who is often the only staff on site mean a stay here rewards travelers interested in the house and the city around it. It suits a traveler researching Appalachian coal and railroad history, or simply looking for a quiet, personal alternative to a highway hotel outside Bluefield.
