Lokal Hotel Cape May
A Depression-Era Apartment House, Rebuilt for the Beach
Half a block from the sand and a short walk from the Cape May Convention Center, Lokal Hotel occupies a faded apartment building that had seen better decades before Philadelphia-based husband-and-wife team Chad and Courtney Ludeman took it on. Their small hotel group had already proven the formula twice over in Philadelphia and Fishtown: strip away the front-desk theater, keep the architecture’s bones, and let good design and real kitchens do the rest. Cape May was their third outpost, opened in August 2019, and it arrived in a town built almost entirely on gingerbread trim and wraparound porches with something deliberately different — a contemporary, apartment-style stay just down the street from the grand old Chalfonte Hotel.
Why It Works
We chose Lokal because it does something few Cape May properties attempt: it treats the stay as an apartment you get to live in for a few days, not a themed room you pass through. Every one of the eight units has a full kitchen, a dining area, and its own outdoor terrace or deck, which means breakfast can happen on your own schedule and dinner doesn’t have to mean a reservation. The “invisible service” model — keyless entry, no lobby queue, help available when you actually want it — suits travelers who’d rather spend their check-in minutes at the pool than at a counter.
Why This Location
Stockton Place sits in the quieter residential pocket of Cape May, close enough to the beach and the Convention Center to walk in a few minutes, but far enough from Washington Street Mall’s crowds to feel like a neighborhood rather than a tourist strip. The Chalfonte, one of the city’s oldest grand hotels, is down the block, and the contrast is part of the point: Cape May’s Victorian core is one of the best-preserved in the country, and Lokal’s clean-lined courtyard gives it a counterpoint rather than a copy.
Price: €€€
Vibe: contemporary apartment-hotel in a Victorian beach town
Chambres: 8 units total — 4 studios and 4 two-bedroom apartments with a loft twin bed, sleeping up to 28 guests
Best For: couples and families who want a kitchen and a pool over a concierge desk
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the 45-foot saltwater pool’s built-in drinking bench
Dining: no restaurant on-site; every unit has a full kitchen and dining area
Amenities: saltwater pool, fire pits, outdoor kitchen, complimentary bikes, loaner Ford Bronco, Yeti coolers and tumblers for guest use
Eight Units, Full Kitchens, a Loft for the Kids
The room count is small by design: four studios and four two-bedroom apartments, the latter with a lofted twin bed that works well for a child or a second couple traveling together. Furnishings and art lean on Cape May’s own makers, and linens and finishes were sourced locally rather than shipped in from a hospitality catalog, which gives the interiors a specificity most beach-town rentals skip. Every unit’s kitchen is a real one — not a kettle and a mini-fridge — so a grocery run on arrival sets you up for the whole stay.
The Pool With a Drinking Bench
The courtyard is the hotel’s actual center of gravity: a 45-foot saltwater pool with a built-in bench that doubles as a swim-up bar seat, flanked by fire pits and an outdoor kitchen for guests who’d rather grill than go out. Lokal stocks the courtyard with Yeti coolers and tumblers, lawn games, and Turkish-towel totes, and the loaner Ford Bronco is available for guests who want to explore beyond walking distance. It is, by design, the kind of space that keeps people out of their rooms.
Before You Book
With only eight units, Lokal Hotel Cape May books out quickly for summer weekends, and the property’s first full weekend sold out entirely. It suits travelers who want a kitchen, a deck, and a saltwater pool over turndown service, and who don’t mind a short walk rather than a beachfront address. Those who want a classic Cape May veranda-and-rocking-chair stay should look to one of the Victorian inns instead; those drawn to a cleaner, apartment-style version of the same beach town should book well ahead.
