Sugarloaf
★★★At the Foot of the Mountain Itself
The Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel does not sit near the ski area; it sits inside it, a steep-roofed Swiss-Gothic structure rising six floors at the literal base of the mountain in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. Built in 1986 and renovated in 2012, it was designed for one purpose: get guests from bed to lift line in the time it takes to lace boots, and back again without a shuttle, a parking lot, or a second thought.
Why It Works
We chose this hotel because ski-in, ski-out is a phrase a lot of properties use loosely and this one earns literally: the lifts are visible from the building, the mountain's village wraps around it, and 120 rooms is enough scale to run real amenities — two pools, a health club, a spa, a steakhouse — without losing the feel of a mountain lodge to the size of a convention hotel. It is a working ski hotel built by people who ski, not a generic resort that added a lift pass to the brochure.
Why This Location
Carrabassett Valley sits deep in western Maine, built entirely around Sugarloaf itself, New England's second-highest peak and one of the only mountains in the East with lift-served above-treeline terrain. The nearest international airport is roughly 115 miles out, which keeps the valley quieter than the Northeast's more crowded ski towns, and the hotel's position in the village core means golf, tennis, and the river are a short walk away once the snow melts.

Inside the Rooms
Six floors of Swiss-Gothic steep roofs and timber framing set the tone outside; inside, the 2012 renovation brought the rooms into a more contemporary register without stripping out the lodge warmth that the architecture promises from the parking lot. The room count and the building's scale mean groups and families book here as easily as a couple chasing first tracks, and the hotel's position at the mountain's base means every room is, at most, a short walk from a lift.
Four Seasons on the Mountain
Winter is the obvious draw, with ski-in, ski-out access to Sugarloaf's full terrain, but the hotel does not go quiet once the snow melts. The golf club sits about two miles away, tennis courts and the game room fill the gaps between rounds, and boating and fishing on the valley's lakes and rivers give summer guests a reason to book a mountain hotel in July. Between seasons, the health club, spa, and two pools — one indoor, one outdoor — keep the hotel running at a pace closer to a full resort than a ski-season-only lodge.
Before You Book
This is a hotel for people who want the mountain itself, not a mountain view from a town twenty minutes away: book here for proximity to the lifts first, and treat the steakhouse, pools, and spa as the reward for a day spent outside rather than the main event. Winter weekends and holiday weeks fill the fastest, given how few hotels in the valley offer true ski-in, ski-out access, so a shoulder-season or weekday stay is the easier way to secure a room at the base of the mountain.
