A Small Luxury Hotel in a Lake Country Town

Delafield is not the kind of place that usually gets a five-star hotel: a lake-country town of a few thousand people, known for antique shops and a Civil War museum rather than skylines. The Delafield Hotel sits on Genesee Street regardless, a 38-room property that joined Small Luxury Hotels of the World as, for years, the only member of that collection in the Midwest. The effect is deliberate: a serious hotel, set down in a small town on purpose, built for people who want Milwaukee's polish without Milwaukee's traffic.

Why It Works

We chose it for the gap between what the town promises and what the hotel delivers. Thirty-eight rooms, each individually furnished rather than stamped from a template, Kohler fixtures and Aveda products in every bathroom, and a restaurant, Andrew's, built around a wine cellar visible through the lobby. None of that happens by accident in a town this size; it happens because the hotel was built to compete with properties well outside its zip code, and still does.

Why This Location

Delafield sits roughly midway between Milwaukee and Madison, close enough to either for a day trip and far enough from both to feel like a genuine escape. Kettle Moraine State Forest and Lapham Peak are minutes away for a walk or a hike, the Civil War Museum of Delafield and the Hawks Inn & Delafield History Center cover the town's history, and downtown's antique shops and small restaurants are a short stroll from the front door. It is a hotel built for people driving between two cities who have decided not to rush.

Rooms Built for Longer Looks

The 38 rooms range widely in size, and the hotel treats that as a feature rather than hiding it: each one is furnished individually, with its own mix of artwork and layout rather than a repeated floor plan. Bathrooms lean toward the kind of detail that rewards a longer look: Kohler soaking tubs, rain showers, Aveda amenities, the sort of fittings a traveler notices on the second night rather than the first.

Andrew's, and the Wine Room by the Lobby

The hotel's restaurant, Andrew's, serves French-influenced American cooking and keeps a wine list built around a cellar of roughly 2,000 bottles, the kind of number that turns a hotel restaurant into a reason to book on its own. The cellar's presence is felt before a glass is ordered: a wine room sits behind glass just off the lobby, visible to anyone walking in, and live jazz on select nights turns dinner into the evening's plan rather than a stop before it.

Before You Book

The hotel does a steady trade in weddings and corporate meetings, with banquet space for roughly 300 guests and several smaller rooms besides, so a quiet weekend here can share the property with an event; it is worth asking what is on the calendar before booking a getaway. It pairs naturally with a round at Erin Hills or a stay bookended by Milwaukee and Madison, less naturally with a traveler who wants true isolation.
