Built for a Town, Not for a Highway Exit

Most American towns of this size take their hotels from the interstate exit: a parking lot, a lobby, a breakfast bar. Findlay got something else. Marathon Petroleum, headquartered here, partnered with First Hospitality to put a five-storey hotel on South Main Street, in the historic centre rather than beside the highway, and asked for European architecture so that it would sit with the older frontages instead of against them. The brief, in the company's own words, was a community hotel that celebrates Findlay and Hancock County. What opened in 2018 carries an AAA Four Diamond rating and gives a county seat in northwest Ohio a lobby that behaves like a living room.

Why It Works

The reason to book here is the gap between expectation and delivery. Four Diamond service, ninety-nine rooms and a serious steakhouse are what you would expect in Columbus or Cleveland, not in a town on the Blanchard River, and the standard holds because the hotel was built to a corporate campus's requirements rather than to a leisure market's. The second reason is the building itself, drawn to belong to Main Street. The third is the practical range: a ballroom that seats several hundred, seven thousand square feet of meeting space, a fitness centre and bikes, which is more than most independents this size carry.

Why This Location

South Main Street is the historic spine of Findlay, and the hotel stands on it rather than at a distance, so the downtown restaurants, the shops and the Marathon Petroleum campus are all a walk away. Findlay is the county seat of Hancock County, set on the Blanchard River in the flat farmland of northwest Ohio, about forty-five minutes south of Toledo on I 75, with Columbus and Detroit each within a couple of hours. That position is the point: it is the natural stop for anyone driving the corridor who wants a proper dinner and a real room. The University of Findlay and the Hancock Historical Museum are both close, and the bikes cover the rest.

Ninety-Nine Rooms and One Presidential Suite

Ninety-nine keys across five floors, split between eighty-seven standard rooms, eleven suites and a single presidential suite at the top of the range. The rooms are generous by boutique standards and finished in a classical register, dark woods and restrained colour rather than the design statements the word boutique usually promises. The lobby is where the building shows its intention: it was laid out as a living room, not a check-in hall, and it gets used as one by people who are not staying. Ask for a suite if the stay runs past two nights, since the difference is space rather than decoration.

Mancy's, and the Ballroom Behind It

Mancy's carries its own history into the hotel. The name has meant steak and seafood in northwest Ohio since 1921, and the Findlay room serves three meals a day with a bar list running past a hundred wines and craft beers, which is not a given in a town this size. Private dining rooms take the smaller parties. Behind them sits the event machinery: a ballroom for a few hundred and meeting rooms that fill through the working week with Marathon business and through the weekend with weddings. It gives the ground floor a rhythm that most hotels of this footprint never develop.
