The Shay, a Destination by Hyatt

Most beach hotels sell a view and call it a day. Beach House Hermosa Beach sells an actual suite: ninety-six studios, every one over 450 square feet, with a separated living room and bedroom, a gas-burning fireplace, and a private patio or balcony facing the Pacific. Sitting directly on The Strand — the twenty-six-mile paved path that runs the length of the South Bay's beaches — the hotel turns a simple beach trip into something closer to a proper stay, with the kind of room that makes a rainy Southern California evening feel like part of the plan rather than a disruption to it.
We chose Beach House Hermosa Beach because it treats "beachfront" as a design brief, not just a location tag. Every suite gets the same core layout — fireplace, kitchenette, dual tub-and-shower with granite counters, two flat-screen televisions — with the price difference coming down to how much ocean the view actually shows. L'Occitane toiletries and a genuinely helpful front desk round out a stay that reads as considered rather than simply well-located.
The address, 1300 The Strand, puts guests directly on Hermosa Beach's stretch of the famous beachfront path, shared by cyclists, joggers and skaters running the length of the South Bay. Downtown Hermosa Beach's restaurants and the Hermosa Beach Pier are an easy walk north, while Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach are both a short drive for guests who want to see more of the coast without moving hotels.
Price: Premium
Vibe: beachfront, suite-style, family-friendly
Rooms: 96 suites, all over 450 square feet, in five view categories
Best For: couples and families who want real suite space directly on the sand
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the gas fireplace in every suite, a rare touch for a beachfront hotel of this size
Dining: complimentary continental breakfast, room service, easy walk to Hermosa Beach's restaurant strip
Amenities: beachfront access, outdoor hot tub, fitness centre, spa and wellness centre, valet parking
Attractions: Hermosa Beach Pier and downtown restaurants (walking distance), Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach (short drive)
The five view categories — from Premium Ocean Front down to Standard Non-View — all share the same bones: a step-down living area with a queen sleeper sofa, a separate bedroom, and enough square footage to actually unpack for more than a weekend. It's a layout built with longer beach stays in mind, the kind where a kitchenette and a real living room matter more than a marble lobby.
The Strand itself is as much a part of the stay as the hotel: a twenty-six-mile paved path that runs past Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo Beach, filled from morning to evening with cyclists, runners and skaters. Guests can rent a bike steps from the front door and cover miles of coastline without ever getting in a car, then come back to a private balcony to watch the same path from above at sunset.
This is a family-friendly hotel rather than an adults-only retreat, so guests wanting a quieter, couples-only atmosphere may prefer a smaller boutique property inland. The Strand's foot and bike traffic means the ground-floor Strand Ocean Front suites see more activity outside than the upper-floor rooms, worth factoring in for guests who value quiet over direct patio access. Parking is valet-only and priced separately from the room, standard for a beachfront property of this size, and it’s worth reserving well ahead for summer weekends, when the South Bay’s beach towns fill up fast and rooms with the best ocean views go first.
