A Plantation Neighbourhood Above Poipu

Kukui‘ula covers a stretch of Kauai's south shore above Poipu, on land that grew sugar before it grew anything else. The Lodge is the accommodation side of it: three small neighbourhoods of bungalows, cottages and villas, laid out low against the slope with lawns and lava rock between them rather than corridors. Nothing here reads as a hotel block. You park at your own door, you have a kitchen, and the ocean is a few minutes down the hill. What makes it a stay rather than a rental is the club behind it, which supplies the golf, the spa, the pools, the farm and the two kitchens that cook from it.

Why It Works

Most of Kauai's luxury inventory is either a large resort on the sand or a private house with nothing attached. This sits in between, and that is the reason to book it: the independence of a residence with the services of a club. The second reason is the farm. Ten acres of fruit, herbs, flowers and vegetables, open for guests to harvest and feeding both restaurants, is a real point of difference on an island where most kitchens import. The third is the golf. A Tom Weiskopf course with ocean views on every hole is the kind of asset a whole resort is usually built around; here it arrives with the key.

Why This Location

Poipu is the dry, sunny side of Kauai, which matters on an island whose interior holds one of the wettest places on earth. The beaches at Poipu and Shipwreck are a few minutes down the hill, Spouting Horn a little further west, and Old Koloa Town with its plantation storefronts is the nearest place to eat outside the club. Waimea Canyon and the road up to Koke‘e are about an hour west, the Na Pali coast boat trips leave from Port Allen in the same direction, and Lihue airport is roughly half an hour away. The hill position brings trade winds and a view rather than beachfront, which is the trade to understand before booking.

Bungalows, Cottages and Villas

Accommodation runs from one bedroom up to four across the three neighbourhoods, and the choice is worth making carefully. Bungalows are the compact end and work for a couple. Cottages add space and often a guest cottage alongside, which is the configuration two couples or a family with teenagers should look for. Villas are the largest. A number of units carry a private plunge pool, which changes the shape of a day in a climate like this one. All of them have full kitchens and their own parking, and all of them come with club access. The finishes are island contemporary: wood, stone, deep verandas, shutters left open.

The Club: Golf, Farm and Spa

The Club at Kukui‘ula is what separates this from a rental. Golf comes first: the Weiskopf course runs along the slope with water in sight from every hole, and it sits consistently among the best rated in the state. Hi‘ilani Spa is for adults and works with Hawaiian traditions and locally grown material. The lagoon pools are saltwater, with a swimming end and a shallow end for children. Tennis, pickleball and a full watersports desk fill the rest of the day. And then there is the farm, ten acres of it, where the harvesting is done by whoever turns up with a basket.
