The Berkman
★★★★An Apartment Building Built for Longer Stays
Rochester, Minnesota exists in the orbit of one institution, Mayo Clinic, and much of its hospitality is built around visits that last longer than a weekend: patients, families, specialists passing through. The Berkman answers that reality directly, with apartment-style units rather than standard hotel rooms, up to a three-bedroom suite with its own balcony, built for a stay measured in weeks rather than nights. It is less a hotel competing for a weekend than a residence competing for a difficult month.
Why It Works
We chose it because it treats a longer medical-city stay as worth designing for properly, rather than defaulting to a standard room with a mini-fridge. Extra-large beds, private bathrooms, and balconies with city views come standard, and a penthouse suite adds its own terrace for anyone staying long enough to want outdoor space of their own. A sauna, an outdoor pool, a games room, and an outdoor fireplace give the building the feel of a residence more than a hotel, exactly the register a difficult trip benefits from. Even the dog run suggests a building thinking about guests who are staying, not just passing through.
Why This Location
The hotel sits close enough to Rochester's medical core to matter: the historic Plummer Building is an eighteen-minute walk away, the Mayo Civic Center is just over two kilometers off, and a shuttle runs directly to the Mayo Clinic's Gonda Building for guests who would rather not drive. Outside the medical campus, Rochester's surrounding countryside opens up for boating, fishing, hiking, and cycling, useful for a family filling the hours between appointments, and downtown Rochester itself has grown up around exactly this kind of extended visit.

Amenities: sauna, fitness centre, seasonal outdoor pool, games room, outdoor fireplace and seating, dog run, private parking
Balconies, Not Just Beds
The apartment-style layout is the hotel's real differentiator: most rooms come with their own balcony and city views, a detail that matters more on a two-week stay than a two-night one. The three-bedroom unit extends the idea furthest, built for a family who would otherwise be splitting across two or three separate hotel rooms, and the penthouse suite's terrace gives a single traveler the same outdoor space on a smaller scale. A private bathroom in every unit sounds basic until a guest remembers how rarely extended-stay properties still guarantee one.
Red Cow, Downstairs
Dinner does not require leaving the building: Red Cow, a Minnesota restaurant group known for its burgers and modern American menu, runs the ground-floor restaurant and bar, with vegetarian options alongside the rest of the menu. For a guest who has spent the day at appointments, a downstairs restaurant with a familiar, well-regarded name is its own kind of convenience, one less decision on a day already full of them.
Before You Book
This is a hotel built around one city's particular rhythm, and it rewards travelers who are in Rochester for Mayo Clinic rather than passing through on a road trip. The seasonal outdoor pool runs only part of the year, worth checking before counting on it, and the apartment-style units are worth the extra planning for anyone staying more than a few nights.
