The Inn on Knowles Hill Bed & Breakfast Hotel
★★★★★A 1927 Mansion That Kept Its Guest List
Charles Segerstrom, one of Gold Country's more prosperous investors, built this hilltop mansion in 1927 using materials and techniques meant to last, and they have: mahogany woodwork, vintage hardware, and aged finishes remain largely original nearly a century later. The house has hosted presidents, governors, and cultural figures over the decades, and the inn has made that history explicit rather than incidental, naming its rooms for the guests who actually stayed in them.
Why It Works
We chose it because the history here is verifiable rather than decorative: a mansion built by a named investor, in a named year, using techniques still visible in the woodwork, and a guest list specific enough to put real names on the doors. A two-course gourmet breakfast, served on fine china in period dining rooms and cooked in a period-restored kitchen, extends the same attention to the one meal every guest shares. It is the rare inn where the history is the amenity, not the backdrop to one, and nearly a century of continuous use has only deepened that.
Why This Location
The mansion sits on a rock-encrusted summit two blocks from downtown Sonora, close enough to walk into town and far enough above it to keep its own grounds and gardens. Sonora sits in the heart of California's Gold Country, within range of Yosemite National Park, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, and Calaveras Big Trees State Park, which makes the inn a workable base for a Sierra Nevada trip built around more than one destination. Few Gold Country lodgings put a guest this close to both a historic downtown and a national park in the same stay.

Vibe: 1920s Gold Country mansion, presidential history, hilltop grandeur
Chambres: 6 king rooms named for historical guests, with four suite configurations for larger parties
Best For: history buffs, Yosemite-bound travelers, couples wanting a storied Gold Country base
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the room names themselves, Hoover, Warren, Willkie, Wallace Beery, each marking an actual guest of the house
Dining: two-course gourmet breakfast on fine china, cooked in a period-restored kitchen
Amenities: period dining rooms, gardens, fireplace, banquet and meeting facilities, cooking classes and themed dinner nights
Rooms Named for the People Who Stayed In Them
Six king rooms carry the names of the house's own history: Charles Segerstrom, Herbert Hoover, Earl Warren, Melvin Belli, Wendell Willkie, and Wallace Beery. Add-on rooms, the Ruth Bryan Owen and the Helen Keller, pair with the larger rooms to sleep up to six, and four suite configurations extend the same pairings for a family or a small group traveling together. It is a naming system that only works because the names are real, and it turns a simple room assignment into a small piece of local history.
Breakfast in the Period Dining Room
Every stay includes a two-course gourmet breakfast, served on fine china in the mansion's original dining rooms and prepared in a kitchen restored to match the house's era. Homemade bread, eggs florentine, and fresh coffee anchor a menu built to match the setting rather than compete with it, and the inn supplements the routine with occasional cooking classes and themed dinner nights for guests staying longer than one night.
Before You Book
This is a small property built around its own history, better suited to a couple or a Gold Country road trip than a large group looking for resort-scale amenities. The inn has picked up a TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Award and a 5-star rating over the years, and its hilltop setting, two blocks above downtown Sonora, rewards a traveler happy to walk rather than drive to dinner.
