Eighteen Rooms at the Gate of the First National Park

West Yellowstone exists because of the park. The town sits on the Montana side, a grid of streets that stops dead at the boundary, and almost everything in it is built to move people through the west gate. The 1872 Inn takes its name from the year the park was created, the first anywhere in the world, and it plays the position rather than the volume: eighteen rooms, adults only, on Yellowstone Avenue within a few minutes' walk of the entrance. The decoration follows the Montana lodge line without tipping into pastiche. What it really sells is the first hour of the morning, when the road into the park is still empty.

Why It Works

The first reason is the walk to the gate. In a place where the difference between a good day and a crowded one is measured in minutes at the entrance station, leaving at first light without joining the queue out of town is worth more than any amenity. The second is the adults only policy, which in a family destination like this one produces a quieter house than the size alone would suggest. The third is the register. Eighteen rooms means an innkeeper rather than a front desk, and the level of finish is closer to a boutique hotel than to the motels that line the same avenue.

Why This Location

Yellowstone Avenue runs to the west entrance and the inn stands on it. Through the gate, the Madison River road leads to the geyser basins: Fountain Paint Pot, Grand Prismatic and Old Faithful make the classic first morning, between half an hour and an hour's drive inside the park depending on traffic and bison. Hebgen Lake and the Earthquake Lake visitor centre lie north west on the Montana side. The town itself holds the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center, an IMAX screen and the restaurants, all within a few blocks. Bozeman airport is around ninety minutes north, Idaho Falls a similar run west, and the winter road closures reshape all of it.

Montana Lodge, Without the Kitsch

Eighteen rooms, and that number shapes everything else here. The look is Montana lodge, wood, wool and warm colour, executed with more restraint than the term usually promises: no antler chandeliers, no varnished log furniture. Nobody under eighteen stays, so the corridors stay quiet at both ends of the day. A sauna and a fitness room cover the recovery after a long day on the boardwalks, and parking is free and on site, which matters in a town built around cars. Light sleepers should ask for a room set back from Yellowstone Avenue in high summer.

Two Seasons, Two Different Stays

There are two seasons here and they are not the same stay. From spring to autumn the road through the west gate is open and the day starts early: geyser basins before the coaches, the Madison valley in the evening light, dinner back in town. In winter the park road closes to cars and the town turns over to snowcoaches, snowmobiles and ski trails, which is when the wolves are easiest to watch and when West Yellowstone empties of everyone except the people who came for exactly that. The inn runs through both. The second is the one experienced visitors book.
