The Greystone Inn
What won us over here is the provenance: a 1915 Swiss-style mansion built by Lucy...
The Inn on Biltmore Estate sits within the 8,000 acres of George Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate outside Asheville, North Carolina, grounds landscaped by Frederick Law Olmsted and anchored by Biltmore House, a 1895 mansion that remains America's largest private home. The 209 room inn opened in 2001 as one of two lodging options on the property, and it was built specifically to extend the estate's own character into a hotel stay rather than operate as an independent property that happens to sit nearby.
We selected The Inn on Biltmore Estate for credentials that are difficult for any competitor in the region to match. Forbes Travel Guide rates it Four Star, AAA rates it Four Diamond, and Condé Nast Traveler includes it on its Gold List, a combination that places the property among a genuinely small set of American hotels. Room furnishings come from the estate's own Biltmore Collection, drawing on the grounds, gardens, and architectural details of the mansion itself, so the connection to the estate runs through the interiors rather than stopping at the lobby.
Asheville has built a reputation as a food and arts destination in its own right, but the Biltmore Estate remains the region's defining landmark, a National Historic Landmark that draws visitors regardless of their interest in the surrounding city. Staying inside the estate rather than in town removes the drive in and out through the gates each day, and it gives guests access to grounds and gardens most Biltmore visitors only see on a single day pass.
Price: €€€€
Vibe: Four Diamond luxury inside a National Historic Landmark estate
Rooms: 209, including nine suites
Best For: Travelers who want to experience Biltmore Estate as residents rather than day visitors
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: The rimless pool looking out over the estate grounds
Dining: The Dining Room, with estate raised ingredients, and The Library & Veranda for casual meals
Amenities: Heated outdoor pool, spa, fitness centre, mountain and river views
Attractions: Biltmore House, the Olmsted designed gardens, the French Broad River
The Dining Room serves white tablecloth meals built around the season's finest local and estate raised ingredients, meats, seafood, and handmade pasta among them, giving the kitchen a direct line to the land the hotel sits on. The Library & Veranda offers a more relaxed register, with casual dining and cocktails inspired by George Vanderbilt's own personal library, extending the estate's history into the glass as much as the plate.
The heated outdoor pool is built without a visible edge, letting the water appear to run straight into the mountain views and the French Broad River valley beyond it, a detail that turns a standard hotel amenity into one of the property's signature features. Paired with a spa and fitness centre, it gives guests a reason to spend an afternoon on property between visits to the house and gardens rather than treating the inn purely as a place to sleep.
Few hotels anywhere in the country hold a Forbes Four Star rating, an AAA Four Diamond designation, a spot on Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List, and a Southern Living Best Hotel in the South title at the same time, and The Inn on Biltmore Estate carries all of them. That stack of recognition, combined with a setting that cannot be replicated anywhere else, makes a strong case for the inn as one of the more complete luxury stays in the American South.
