Boulder does not have many places to sleep that feel like Boulder. There is the campus, there is the mall, and there is a ring of highway lodging that could be anywhere in Colorado. The Bradley is the exception: a Craftsman building on 16th Street, in the historic grid a short walk north of the Pearl Street pedestrian mall, with twelve rooms and a great room built around a river rock fireplace. Warm wood everywhere, a porch that catches the sun, and an evening that runs to a poured glass rather than a key card and a lift. It behaves like a house that takes guests, which is what it is.

Why It Works

The first reason is the address. Pearl Street is the whole point of downtown Boulder, and being able to walk out to dinner, a bookshop and a bar without driving changes the shape of a stay in a town where parking is a daily negotiation. The Flatirons stand at the edge of town, roughly fifteen minutes away, with Chautauqua the classic way in, and the ski country beyond opens up a winter stay as well as a summer one. Denver and its airport lie to the southeast, which makes this a workable first or last night as well as a destination.
