Omni San Francisco occupies 500 California Street, the corner of California and Montgomery where the city's last cable car line still climbs past the front door. The building opened in 1926 as the Financial Center Building, designed by local architect Frederick H. Meyer and finished in just nine months on a site that had earlier held Parrott's Granite Block, a structure famous for surviving the 1906 earthquake. Omni bought the dormant building in 2002 and spent years restoring its granite façade and Renaissance Revival detailing before opening a 362-room hotel inside it, keeping San Francisco's financial history standing rather than clearing it for something new.
